If you’ve ever scrolled through a coach or wellness practitioner’s Instagram and thought “wow” I’d bet money her brand and brand photography had something to do with that feeling. The truth is that before anyone reads your caption or lands on your homepage, they see you, and your face, your energy, your space. And in about two seconds, they’ve already decided whether they trust you enough to keep scrolling.
Great branding photography is truly essential and that’s exactly why I’m walking you through how to prep for one.
Let’s get one thing straight. Branding photography is not the same as a few cute selfies or that one good photo your friend took at brunch. A branding photoshoot is strategic and it’s built around your ideal client, your offers, your brand colors, and the story you’re trying to tell across your website and social media.
Here’s what good brand photos actually do for your business:
They build instant trust. People buy from people they feel like they already know. Professional brand photography gives your audience a real look at who you are, how you work, and what it might feel like to be your client.
They make your website convert better. A homepage full of stock photos or grainy iPhone shots tells visitors your business isn’t quite ready yet, even if your offer is incredible. High quality, on brand images signal that you take your work seriously, and that translates directly into bookings.
They give your content a personality. When your photos match your brand colors, your vibe, and your voice, your Instagram feed and website start to feel cohesive. That consistency is what turns casual scrollers into people who remember you.
They save you time down the road. One solid branding shoot can fuel months of website updates, social posts, email graphics, and marketing materials. Instead of scrambling for a photo every time you need one, you’ll have a whole library to pull from.
If you’ve been putting off a brand photoshoot because it feels intimidating, I get it. But the return on investment is real, and a little prep work makes the entire experience so much smoother.
Before you even think about wardrobe, go back to your brand. What colors are you working with? What’s the feeling you want people to have when they land on your page? Calm and grounded? Bold and energetic? Warm and approachable? Your photoshoot should reflect that same energy, because your photos are an extension of your brand identity, not a separate project.
If you don’t have brand colors, fonts, or a clear visual direction locked in yet, that’s actually the first sign you might need a brand refresh before your shoot. Photography works best when it’s built on a strong foundation.
This is where a lot of business owners get stuck. They show up to their shoot, take a hundred pretty photos, and then realize none of them actually work for their website or their content calendar.
Before your shoot, map out where these photos are actually going to live.
Think about:
Once you know where the photos are going, you can build a shot list that includes headshots, candid working shots, lifestyle images, detail shots of your workspace or products, and a few flat lay or styled images for variety.
I put together a full brand shoot preparation guide to walk you through every single one of these steps in more detail, from wardrobe planning to shot lists to how to communicate your vision to your photographer. It’s free to download, and it’s the exact resource I wish every client had in hand before their shoot.
Wardrobe is one of the biggest stress points for most people prepping for a branding photoshoot, so give yourself plenty of time here. A few tips that make a huge difference:
Your location should support your brand story. A wellness coach might shoot in a bright, plant filled studio or outdoors in natural light. A business coach might want a clean, modern office setting. A beauty entrepreneur might want a mix of studio glam shots and lifestyle moments in her space.
Natural light is usually the most flattering and versatile option, so if you’re shooting outdoors or near big windows, aim for early morning or late afternoon when the light is soft.
You don’t need a full glam, but a little intention goes a long way. Do a trial run with your hair and makeup a few days before if you’re trying something new. Practice a few poses in the mirror so you’re not freezing up in front of the camera. And if posing makes you nervous, tell your photographer ahead of time so they can guide you through it.

I know first hand, how stressful a brand shoot can be when you feel unprepared and aern’t sure what you even need out of the experience. I never want my clients to feel that ways so we’ve built photography direction into the process of working together. That means you walk away with a clear, custom guide you can hand straight to your photographer, covering your brand colors, the mood and energy we’re going for, and the specific shots your website and content actually need.
And if you don’t have a photographer yet, don’t worry, we’ve built relationships with photographers across many different states and we’re always happy to help match you with someone who fits your vibe and your budget.
